Are Text Messages Gone when you Delete Them?

Despite what you may have heard, if you delete a text from an iPhone it is not gone forever. Making use of forensic software programs like Paraben's iRecovery Stick, it's possible to recover deleted text messages from an iPhone. For that matter, considerably more information than merely sms messages will be retrieved, including e-mail accounts created while using the iPhone, call logs, online browsing history, contacts, calendars, pictures, etc. iRecovery software is capable of recovering ascii text data only, so it cannot retrieve deleted pictures.

How iRecovery Recovers Data

When a text message is deleted from the phone, it's really not deleted. The data is held in the unallocated portion of the iPhone's physical memory. At this point, however, some or all of the data is subject to being overwritten. There are several variables that dictate how much, if any of the data can be recovered. Usage and free space on the physical memory of the iPhone are the major factors that affect this. The less space available, the more likely the data can be overwritten, especially if the user sends and receives many text messages daily. That said, iRecovery can usually recover up to 2,999 full or partial text messages. Thus, recovering a single text message may be a challenge, but getting enough information to establish a pattern is very likely.

Who Wants to Recover Deleted Texts?

The single most common reason for one wanting to recover deleted text messages is suspected infidelity. The next is monitoring what their children are doing. The iRecovery Stick is very effective because, as I mentioned, it will retrieve literally thousands of full or partial text messages. This really is sufficient to determine a pattern of conduct. Many reports of catching cheaters and uncovering evidence of cyber bullying have been reported to us.
