Every senior citizen should have a cell phone as an emergency outlet and being able to get one for free from the federal government isn't a bad place to start. You don't have to be just a senior citizen to qualify for this program though. You can also apply if you're on a government program, disability, a low income party and so on. Since you don't get a lot of minutes per month this isn't meant as a replacement of the home phone but rather an outlet for someone, the senior citizen and so on if their out walking, driving and so forth. It's completely free to apply for and the service is free as well, even the phone. If you're on assistance like Medicaid, Medicare, food stamps, sometimes social security and so on you could potentially get immediate qualification. You can qualify if you're low income but there is more of a qualification process to go through for approval.

You can first check the state and local assistance websites and all you have to do is get some information for the program called Lifelink. All you have to do is follow simple instructions to be able to apply. This is just one of the companies that can give a senior citizen outlet in addition to other individuals.

SafeLink Wireless is the other outlet and it adjudicates the free cell phone programs. The SafeLink program isn't available in every state right now but the number is growing. All you have to do is simply visit the SafeLink website and put in your zip code in order to find out if it's in your area. If it is you can find out if you qualify through going through the qualification process and you'll get both your phone and your minutes directly from the SafeLink program.

After you've applied for your phone you can check back to the website to see where your approval status is at. If you have to go through the income verification process you'll have to go through a little longer wait period but usually not much longer. Once you've qualified they'll mail you your phone. It's usually going to come within a few days to a couple of weeks. You'll have your phone and have it activated and ready for use by the beginning of the next month.

You'll have to qualify again yearly, done in the same manner that you did so initially. Even though we're focusing on an outlet for a senior citizen you can apply if you qualify on any of the programs and more we listed above and you could qualify based upon employment status. SafeLink isn't an exclusionary to seniors. It's a free application process and everything else is free as well so you owe it to yourself and the senior citizen in your life to make sure the application is gone through and a potentially lifesaving cell phone is received.
