In recent years, we have seen that businesses have started to change the way that they operate their telephone systems and the introduction of VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol is one of the biggest changes that we have seen in the last few years. Replacing the ideals of traditional telephone lines, the VoIP system allows you to run a telephone system over the internet, helping you to cut down traditional landline costs.

There are a number of benefits and disadvantages that this style of telephone system can bring, but in general it is a cheap alternative for many businesses who want to keep their telephone costs down, especially if they are making frequent overseas calls.

It's not just a business environment which has taken on board this technology, VoIP has been a popular choice in the home environment and applications such as Skype have brought this type of technology to the forefront. Wherever you are in the world, Skype uses VoIP software to allow you to make calls to loved ones, for free. You can also transfer files, pictures and other documents as you would in an email. Making it far easier to stay in contact with friends or family, this type of technology has dramatically decreased the cost of making overseas telephone calls.

Although VoIP is a great innovation in technology there are many problems associated with the technology which are still being ironed out. The reliability and consistency of the line can be one main problem that is seen, as the telephone quality is entirely dependent on the internet connection. If your internet connection is continually dropping in and out then it can be frustrating to have to continually reconnect your telephone call.

To keep your telephone calls secure it's also important to encrypt your internet connection and although at home you may not need to worry about this, when it comes to using VoIP in a commercial environment it's important to take the safety and reliability of your network seriously.
